1898-1907 John Thomas Raisin
John Jack Thomas Raisin, born in Holbeck in 1865, universally known as taffy, was an apprentice in Beverley before starting his training career in the early 1890s at Hambleton for Edward (Ted) J Percy. |
|
However, in 1898 Percy leased Kingston Warren from the Craven family and brought Raisin with him as trainer. At that point Kingston Warren had just 20 stables, which remained the case until 1945 when it increased to 40. In 1973 there was a further increase to 60, and two years later a further 10 boxes were added. Raisin's string was never very large, often supplemented with some Raisin owned horses, but the pair did celebrate success in the 1897 Ebor Handicap at York with Harvest Money, having already landed the 1894 Ayr Gold Cup with Mimram during their Hambleton days. In 1907 Percy, having sold his entire stud, retired and Raisin returned to his roots to train in Doncaster.

1909 Francis V Priestley
Francis Vickerman Priestley, born in Huddersfield in 1872, was based in Lambourn between 1907 and 1912 when he held a Flat training licence. Initially, in 1907 he was based at Lambourn Place training as a tenant trainer, but also owning horses in his own right. In 1909 he exchanged places with Albert Gilbert, moving down the road to Kingston Warren, but within a year he had returned to Lambourn Place where he remained until 1912. He filled the 12 boxes in 1912, recording 11 winners, but at the end of the season he moved to Chitterne. During the Great War he served in Mesopotania, reaching the rank of Lieutenant, but did not pursue his training career after the War. |
September 1910-1912 Albert John Gilbert
Albert John Gilbert, born in 1856, was part of a family steeped in racing history. His father was an apprentice to the legendary John Day, while his uncle William trained Cremorne (SR 2065) to land the 1872 Epsom Derby. Albert Gilbert joined his uncle as an apprentice at a time when William's son, also William, was there to guide Albert. William Gilbert junior eventually trained an Oaks winner, Lonely (SR 1966) in 1885. Albert was appointed Stud Manager to Hume Webster at his Marden Park Stud before joining the training ranks as private trainer for Sir Maurice Fitzgerald. He trained in Newmarket at Green Lodge for John Musker between 1902 and 1904, and then in 1905 at Hackness Villa, Newmarket for Fitzgerald, but in 1910 he transferred to Lambourn Place, continuing to train for the Fitzgerald family. Within a year he had departed Lambourn Place, replaced by Francis Priestley, and moved to Kingston Warren in September 1910, remaining there until the end of the 1912 season. |
1913-1916 Benjamin C Wetherell
Benjamin Wetherell was a Flat race jockey who rode up until 1897, returning to the saddle between 1908 and 1910. He then joined the training ranks, training for Colonel Brinsley Fitzgerald, of Thornhill House, Kingston Lisle, at Kingston Warren starting in 1913, training 4 winners in that year. He replaced A J Gilbert and remained at Kingston Warren until 1916. |
1919-1922 Arthur Gordon
Arthur Gordon, born in Stamford, Lincs in 1869, was the son of Frank Gordon who steered Miss Mowbray into second place in the 1853 Grand National behind Peter Simple, so it was always likely that Arthur would be involved with horses all of his life. Known by the nickname Moppy, he was a Champion National Hunt jockey, his most prestigious wins being in the 1900 National Hunt Chase on Eros and the 1906 National Hunt Chase on Count Rufus, but he also won the 1895 Valentine Chase at Aintree on Alpheus and the 1901 Liverpool Hurdle on Caracalla. In April 1907 he suffered a devastating fall on Schottishe at the Vale of White Horse meeting which put paid to his riding career, but as one door closed another opened and he expanded his training career at Wroughton which he had launched in 1903. In 1913 he owned and trained Couvrefeu to win the Scottish Grand National in the hands of Dainty and then in 1919 he was enticed to Kingston Warren by Colonel Brinsley Fitzgerald, spending 4 years at Kingston warren before moving to Sparsholt and then Uffington where he died on 10th September 1928 aged just 59.

1920 John T Rogers
John Jack Thomas Rogers, born in 1866, was a useful National Hunt rider before joining the training ranks in 1905. He was a more successful trainer than he was a jockey, winning the 1911 Stewards Cup and 1913 Wokingham Handicap with Sir T Dewar's Braxted, and then moved to French Furze at the Curragh. However, he would often bring a string of horses to England to plunder certain races, and on one such occasion in 1920 he spent 6 months at Kingston Warren making use of spare stables and the gallops. Another occasion when he visited England for a short time was in 1935, and on that occasion, he won the 1935 Ebor Handicap with Museum.

1923-1927 Harry Lowe
Harry Lowe was the private trainer of Colonel Brinsley Fitzgerald after the departure Arthur Gordon, training at Kingston Warren from 1923. He remained there for 5 seasons, but then Fitzgerald became tenant of the nearby magnificent Ashdown House, taking Lowe with him to continue his training career. |
1927-April 1928 Captain Henry Mather-Jackson
Henry Mather-Jackson, born on 27th February 1894 in Kensington, London, was the oldest son of Lord Mather-Jackson who was Lord Lieutenant of Monmouthshire. He was educated at Eton before going to Sandhurst and thereafter joining the 9th Lancers during the War, serving in both Belgium and France. In 1919 he left the armed forces and became a trainer of National Hunt horses at Helidon House, Daventry. He moved to Kingston Warren in 1927 but within a year he died of pneumonia on 2nd April 1928 aged just 34. He left a widow Florence and she employed Frank Mullen for the remainder of the season to train for her. |
April-December 1928 Frank Mullen
Frank Mullen, born on 5th December 1889, worked for Captain Henry Mather-Jackson and when he tragically died on 2nd April 1928 Mullen took on the licence to see Mather-Jackson’s wife Florence through to the end of the season. Florence, a native of America, moved to Monks Orchard, East Hendred and took Frank with he where he trained for a further 20 years. |
1932-October 1937 Roderic Gubbins
Roderic Gubbins trained at Kingsdown Stables in Upper Lambourn, a project initiated by 7th Lord Sefton, Hugh William Osbert Molyneux, and completed in 1937. As well as stables and Kingsdown House there was a Head Lads house and 3 cottages. The first trainer to utilise the stables was Roderic Gubbins who had spent the previous 6 years, between 1932 and 1937, at Kingston Warren stables before his move in November 1937, bringing with him Our Hope, runner-up in the 1937 Champion Hurdle behind Free Fare. The horse quickly made amends for that defeat by winning the 1938 Champion Hurdle 5/1 in the hands of Perry Harding after impressively winning his warm up race, the Greenham Handicap Hurdle 100/7 at Newbury in February 1938. |
1937-1941 Edward R J Bennett
Edward John Ronald Bennett, born in Doncaster on 8th April 1902, rode under National Hunt rules just after the end of the First World War before training jumpers at Eastleach Downs, Lechlade, Gloucestershire. He transferred from Gloucestershire to Kingston Warren in 1937, a year after sending out Trego to run second in the 1936 Grand National. He served during the War, gaining the rank of Captain and after the War he moved to Seven Barrows from his Kinston Warren Stables, near Wantage, at the start of 1946, replacing Harry Cottrill. His stable star was Brightwater who notched up a number of successes, but he was towards the end of his training career and retired in September 1947, opting to buy a farm in Gloucestershire. He was replaced at Seven Barrows by William Payne senior who moved from Epsom. |

1946-1973 Derrick Candy
Derrick Warner John Candy, born on 5th July 1908 in Stone, Staffordshire, was educated at Charterhouse before going to University College Oxford. He did his service in the Sherwood Foresters, reaching the rank of Lieutenant, and then prepared himself for a training role by assisting Miss Wilmott at Binfield Grove in 1933. By 1937 he was ready to apply for his own licence, training initially at Childrey House until the outbreak of War, then serving in the Staffordshire Yeomanry where he was promoted to Captain. After the War he leased Kingston Warren from the Craven family, but between 1958 and 1960 the two parties discussed the transfer of Kingston Warren, with Candy buying it and 1300 acres in 1960. At that point in time the deal also included Seven Barrows which was run by David Hastings. In 1965 Peter Walwyn, training at Windsor House, negotiated a deal with Candy to purchase Seven Barrows, leading to Kingston Warren and Seven Barrows becoming two separate entities once again. During Candy's 28-year career at Kingston Warren he won the 1967 Ascot Gold Cup with Parbury, the 1969 Kings Stand Stakes with Song, and gained back-to-back winners of the Cambridgeshire in 1971 and 1972 with King Midas and Negus respectively. However, Derrek will best be remembered for training High Line, owned by loyal owner William Barnett, guiding him to 3 consecutive victories in the Jockey Club Cup at Newmarket, the horse winning 9 of its 17 races. In addition to the Ascot wins already mentioned, he gained 5 further wins in the 1953 Jersey Stakes, the 1954 Windsor Castle Stakes, the 1958 Fern Hill Stakes, the 1964 Britannia Stakes and the 1968 Norfolk Stakes. Derrick did not prioritise Glorious Goodwood as much as Royal Ascot, but did win 3 races there, the 1967 Molecomb Stakes with Fair Winter, and a double in 1972 with King Midas in the Chesterfield Stakes and Master Sing in the Richmond Stakes. He was ably assisted towards the end of his career by son Henry, and on his retirement in 1973 Henry took charge of Kingston Warren. Derrick lived his remaining years at Scaryside, Kingston Warren, and died on 11th September 1983. |

1973-present Henry Candy
Henry David Nicholas Bourne Candy, born on 28th October 1944, is the son of the former racehorse trainer Derrick Candy. Henry felt he needed to experience other training establishments prior to taking over from his father, so he travelled to Australia and later France to experience how trainers in successful yards in other countries operated. In 1973, on his father's retirement, Henry took charge at Kingston Warren and has won Classics, Champion Stakes and numerous Group races both in England and wider afield. The early 1980s provided Henry with a purple patch, winning the Eclipse Stakes and Coronation Cup with Master Willie in 1981, the Champion Stakes and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 1982 with Time Charter, but the crowning moment in a glittering career must be his classic victory in 1982 when Time Charter won the Epsom Oaks. In 2023 Henry completed half a century in the training ranks, yet he still maintains his enthusiasm, excitement and tremendous ability to send horses at the peak of their condition to capture top class races, Limato provides all the evidence needed to show that is true.
